Get ready for a royal rumble!
Our contender today is St. Wenceslaus I, a 10th-century duke of Bohemia who wasn’t afraid to put his faith into action, even if it meant facing some seriously nasty family drama. This guy was all about peace, justice, and a whole lot of Christian charity, which, as it turned out, didn’t make him too popular with everyone.
Wenceslaus wasn’t your typical power-hungry ruler. He was deeply devout, known for his piety and his commitment to helping the poor. He went out of his way to care for widows, orphans, and prisoners, proving that a ruler could also be a servant.
But Wenceslaus’s goodness didn’t sit well with his ambitious brother, Boleslaus. Boleslaus, hungry for power, saw Wenceslaus’s Christian ways as a weakness. And in a move straight out of a Shakespearean tragedy, Boleslaus had Wenceslaus assassinated. Talk about sibling rivalry!
Wenceslaus’s death made him a martyr and a symbol of Christian virtue. He became the patron saint of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), and his story inspired the famous Christmas carol “Good King Wenceslas.”
St. Wenceslaus reminds us that leadership isn’t just about power; it’s about integrity and compassion. He was a duke, a martyr, and a reminder that even in the face of betrayal, goodness can triumph.
He was a true example of a ruler who put his faith first, and a reminder that doing the right thing isn’t always the easy thing.

Francis Xavier
The Missionary Maverick Who Travelled the World for Christ
Buckle up, history buffs, because our contender today was a true globetrotter for God!
We’re talking about St. Francis Xavier, a 16th-century Jesuit priest who wasn’t afraid to leave the comforts of Europe to spread the Gospel to the far corners of the earth. This guy was a missionary powerhouse, a pioneer of evangelisation, and a man who lived his faith with passion and zeal.
Xavier wasn’t always destined for sainthood. He was a brilliant and ambitious student in Paris, but a chance encounter with St. Ignatius of Loyola changed his life forever.
He joined the newly formed Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and dedicated himself to serving God.
His mission took him to India, Japan, and other parts of Asia. He learned local languages, preached the Gospel, and baptised thousands. He faced incredible challenges, from disease and shipwrecks to cultural barriers and persecution, but he never gave up.
Xavier’s energy and enthusiasm were legendary. He travelled vast distances, often on foot, and his letters are filled with accounts of his adventures and his deep desire to share the love of Christ with everyone he met.
St. Francis Xavier reminds us that faith isn’t meant to be confined to one place; it’s meant to be shared with the world. He was a missionary, a pioneer, and a reminder that a willingness to go where God leads can lead to some extraordinary adventures. He was a true spiritual explorer, and a reminder that the message of Jesus is for everyone, everywhere.
