Yvette of Huy vs Zechariah

Yvette of Huy

The Recluse with a Heart for the Hurting (and a Whole Lotta Self-Discipline!)

Get ready for a story of radical devotion! Our contender today is Yvette of Huy, a 13th-century widow who traded a life of comfort for a life of prayer and service to the most vulnerable. This Belgian Beguine wasn’t afraid to embrace a life of solitude and self-denial, all for the love of God and her fellow human beings.

Yvette’s life took a dramatic turn when her husband died. Instead of remarrying or seeking worldly pleasures, she chose a path of religious devotion. She became a recluse, living in a small cell attached to a church. Now that’s a commitment to the quiet life!

Yvette wasn’t just about prayer and contemplation. She had a heart overflowing with compassion, especially for those suffering from leprosy. She dedicated herself to caring for lepers, tending to their needs with incredible tenderness and courage. In a time when leprosy was greatly feared and those afflicted were often ostracised, Yvette’s actions were truly radical.

She embraced a life of extreme asceticism, fasting and practicing various forms of self-discipline. Her self-denial wasn’t about punishing herself; it was about freeing herself to love God and serve others more fully.

Yvette reminds us that sainthood isn’t about seeking the spotlight; it’s about living a life of love and service, even in the most hidden of ways. She was a recluse, a caregiver, and a reminder that true strength often lies in quiet devotion. She was a true champion of compassion, and a reminder that even in solitude, a heart can shine brightly.

Zechariah

The Prophet with Visions (and a Mute Mystery!)

Now here’s a blast from the past! Our contender today is Zechariah, an Old Testament prophet known for his vivid visions, his powerful messages, and a rather curious period of silence.

This guy was a messenger of God, a voice for the voiceless, and a reminder that even when words fail, faith can still speak volumes.

Now, there are a couple of Zechariahs in the Bible, but we’re focusing on the one who wrote the Book of Zechariah. This prophet lived after the Babylonian exile, when the Jewish people were rebuilding their temple and their lives. And Zechariah had a lot to say to them!

His book is filled with symbolic visions: chariots, candlesticks, and flying scrolls, all pointing to God’s plan for his people and the coming of the Messiah. He encouraged them to rebuild the temple, to live righteous lives, and to look forward to a future of peace and prosperity.

But here’s the mystery: In the New Testament, there’s another Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. And this Zechariah was struck mute for a time because he doubted the angel’s message about his son’s birth. Was this the same Zechariah? We don’t know for sure!

Regardless, Zechariah reminds us that faith isn’t always easy; it requires trust, obedience, and a willingness to speak God’s truth, even when it’s unpopular. He was a prophet, a visionary, and a reminder that even in times of rebuilding and uncertainty, God’s promises will prevail.

He was a true voice for God, and a reminder that sometimes, silence can speak louder than words.
